We have been always choosing what we want to watch or not, we always cared about what our kids are watching and when they are watching. The filtering of the content that can be considered as obnoxious and irrelevant for the set of audience who would see or watch it is called censorship. It is not just a term but a colossal phenomenon that is practiced worldwide in order to prevent the common man from those thought processes or views that have come from a person or a group of persons through their piece of work in most cases it is the work of art, that is reviewed thoroughly before bringing it to the audience. Censorship plays an important role in shaping the society with its screening of the improper content. The most pronounce area where censorship plays a dominant role is the media and the film industry and to some extent the literary works of artisans. In the democratic countries of the world like India, US and many others the freedom for speech or expression is the basic and most important right of every citizen, until any of their citizen tries to exercise this right in a way where it would hurt someone’s sentiments.

We live in a society that is majorly driven by certain norms and following them makes us responsible and unfollowing them makes us a rebel. A section of society who are artists, performers or writers have a certain viewpoint for something that goes around them and they express it through their work of art or creatively depict it but this could hurt many others living in the same society who would found it objectionable or questionable for their values. Censoring such content which otherwise belong to a particular person or a group is the duty of the censor board or committee in any country. To run the checks against the set principles that a particular society harbors to that creative work. Acting as a mediator between the creativity and the societal norms the censor board ensures that the relevant content is produced and the relevance of it is not lost in this process. For example it is the portrayal of violence on television or films that could lead to an increased rate of crime in a society, as it will influence the young minds to do the unprecedented. United States of America is the most liberal nation of the world and it exercises minimal censorship on it’s citizens and the press. Censorship body is meant to protect the sanctity of a society by reminding the people that the norms should be exercised in order to form an egalitarians society.

However the sole purpose of this type of set up to keep a guardian for protecting the society’s customs may sometimes violates the rights of the people who want to bring forth their creativity to the public and give them a different perspective. A governing body to keep an eye on the artists and press so that any inapt material should not reach the public may be a cruel way to hamper the creativity of media and press. It curbs their rights to freely give something to this world which otherwise the world is unaware of. The most controversial of all is politics which should be popularized or defamed with extreme care. Now a days the press practices no control to publish any content on TV or in newspapers, in order to practice the yellow journalism and as a result it creates useless heroes before the nation to gain viewership. The numbers they present are mostly inflated, the facts they put before are exaggerated and the people they glamourize are often shallow.

Censor board has the authority to stop this however it has become increasingly difficult for them to filter out inappropriate from the appropriate content. Another sensitive topic is religion all works that are done based on propagating a particular faith like writing a book, making a movie or a documentary or painting a canvas requires a very careful restraint on the artist or the author in order to make sure that the final piece of art is not disruptive in nature and does not create any upheaval from any community. Censor board has a vital role to play in order to make and maintain a balance of paradigms amongst different sections of people with varied tastes and psyche.

Reality behind Publicity & Promotions

Everyone want to make money and profit is the end goal of every film, work of art or anything is getting produced, profits which is conceived in the mind of a filmmaker and goes down to the heart and mind of a viewer. With an expansive social media the stars and big production houses innovate techniques to promote their ventures. Back in the nineties the promotions were done by producers and not the film stars, however as times have changed and so are the promotional strategies. These days’ film stars have equal contribution in the promotions of the movie as a joint effort of the team. Stars have a mass appeal and they bring that aura with them which is a crowd puller. The movie goers feel pampered and more exhilarated and they go to watch the movie not for its content but for the stars.

The promos and the trailers are the most outdated ways to market the movie in today’s times. The trailer is always preceded by a teaser which is an entirely newer method to arouse the curiosity of the audience. The teaser of any movie easily gets millions of hits in its first month of release. Then comes the social media where the stars step into the promotional mode while they were shooting the film, Deepika and Vin Diesel have been releasing their intricate pictures from the sets of the one of the film. Movie merchandising is another fool proof promotional tactic to enter in the audience’s heads much before the film releases. Tweet about the movie, share pictures on Instagram and make Dub mash videos are some of the marketing techniques of the stars now-a-days.

These stars charge in lakhs per 140 characters for their promotional tweets, oh yes really?? This is again the newer bait for the internet stricken audience. The talking standee done, the extravagant roadshows done by the superstars all across the country, the trailer launch in the theatre is one such grand technique of familiarizing the audience with the film or if it is as weird as hanging a dummy human dead body to promote a horror flick. Television showcases the movie prior to its release not only through trailers and the songs but through other shows and channels participating in the movie promotion to bait the audience of the sitcoms. The fierce competition gives way to innovation and the desperate wish to stay in the race make the promotional strategies more unique and interesting.

The film becomes a household name much before it hits the ticket window. It is all about winning the hearts of the audience as the fate of a movie that is made with a whooping budget of hundreds of crores should be able to recover at least its cost. The basic idea of promotion is to get what is invested and rest is taken care by the script and novelty of the plot. This is the reason why low budget movies do not rely on weirdest promotional ideas but they concentrate their efforts on the plot of the movie and resort to modest ways of campaigning. Internet has made everything look so unique and approachable that the movie marketing is also driven by the force of internet. The movie games, the on line chat with the star cast and motion posters are gifts of digital marketing that have definite returns.

The classic ways of promotion like hoardings, posters etc. do still exist, but they are not so appealing to the senses where audience refuse to turn their heads away from their tab or phone. Promotions are the heart and soul of the project and it should be planned strategically just like any other launch of a product in the market. The branding of a movie project through its star cast is a commonplace now. The movie not only benefits its stars but the stars also benefit a movie before its release. With this the production houses have also created their own brands and glorify this movie business by their logos.

The star sells the movie and the movie sells a star! The atypical promotional campaigns act on the minds of the viewers they remember the tactic of promotion more than the movie down the line.

Does Internet is Winning Race against Television and Radio?

In the year 2005 when popular video hosting site was launched by three ex-employees of PayPal little did they know that their concept would revolutionized the world of entertainment and will make them the millionaires by the millennials. The concept of video sharing over the internet has not only changed the face of media but has created a boom in many businesses. You Tube is one such medium that has taken the viewers with a storm and sending a strong blow to the television industry. The television is unable to come at par with such internet discoveries. The free of cost nature of internet makes it so accessible and preferable by the viewers. The loads of long forgotten videos and clippings just get so easy to access, whereas the absence of time capsule in a television makes it less popular. There are enough evidences that reveal the fact that video streaming is the Gen Z thing and is enjoyed by them more than the static entertainment medium like television. They can watch anything under the sun over the internet at any time and any place they want. Anyone can share the videos which they have and in this way internet gets richer in its content.

The CDs have lost their sheen ever since videos on internet has plunge into the market. Like the television many video hosting websites also has channels for the artists and performers from any field and they can upload their videos and become famous as well as earn as much money as a budding entrepreneur can. There are channels for cookery, make – up artistry, standup comedy, arts and design etc. on internet. The channel owners are the common people from amongst ourselves who exhibit their talents on this free medium and get numerous fans who subscribe to their You Tube channel and hence increasing the viewership. You Tube also help in running the small businesses of the up-and-coming entrepreneurs by giving them the compensation for as many subscribers they could have for their channel. The study on You Tube’s popularity revealed that the viewers of You Tube channels find the content that is published on it as more authentic and they could relate to it more easily as compare to the content that is telecasted over the television.

Internet videos are the most accessible application and most popular one in the smartphones. It is a personalized television where the viewer has full autonomy to decide what to watch and when to watch. You Tube can be watched from any device including smart TV., smart phones, I pad etc. The speed of streaming and the quality of videos that are uploaded on You Tube are the two areas where an improvement is needed in order to transform it into new age television. Alone YouTube attracts tons of viewers and billions of videos are pulled daily by the internet users. You Tube has successfully enchanted the Millennials as the content it offers is far wider in scope and varied than compare to a television.

Internet videos and other digital media has risen in popularity because of the advent of the much handy devices that can be developed on a chip. With all the technological advancements that lead to the fading of traditional methods of entertainment, TV still holds 70 % of viewership because of the high budgets and bigger canvas on which it plays and also because of its mass pervasiveness. However TV is just not about anything whereas You Tube is all about anything which we want to see anywhere.

Video streaming has also diversified into advertising world. It plays the ad just before a video clip and may be between the clips, however the good thing is viewer has the full control to skip the ad while it is playing whereas television does not authorize a viewer with this. The feature which is remarkably distinguishing is the ‘share‘, you can share the content you are watching with anyone be it on WhatsApp, Facebook or Twitter. The war of television and Internet video streaming will be won by the potential contender which can create such engaging channels that could cling onto the minds of the audience and are more relatable. The way digital media is diversifying both Television and YouTube would re vamp their look and accessibility and will reach the widest audience.

International Breeze of Regional Entertainment

There was time when you ask someone that when the last time you have watched regional cinema is and their response was eehhh, may be couple of year back. This was the situation couple of years back now when you see people discussing about regional cinema, regional television series then it come as surprise. Many regional cinemas have proved themselves to the intestinal category and they have gain the popularity across the globe. 

We are not talking about the regional cinema in south because it was at that caliber since long time but if you talk about other language regional cinema like Marathi, Gujrati or even Punjabi those movies are being well made and people are watching them even international critics are giving good response. So we started analysis that what would have change in those cinema industry so that they have gain much popularity. Were there no good cinema was mad before or were there no good director existed before than now? Was the population of that particular group has been grown? The simple answer is no everything is same then what exactly change for this kind of revolution in regional entertainment.

The pure and simple answer is the acceptance of people. The regional people started accepting these cinemas and they started believing that in our industry also they can make good film. In all industries everything started with spark that one movie get big recognition then people start watching those kind of cinema in Marathi industry it started with film Shwaas and then the trend continues 

Currently there are so many films in regional cinema which are far better than popular films just because the subject and quality these movies can deliver  but only thing lack is the procedures are still not the level where they can spend huge amount of money also the star cast and film futurity is pretty small as compare to other film industries , Regional cinemas usp is there content which multimillion dollar movies cannot even think or dare to make cinemas or do the experiment people are doing in regional cinemas because they cannot afford to lose money rather they make films for money, rest the quality cinema come from regional category not even the cinema but the event and televisions series are making their big records that now people are started recreating them in there language today’s world regional cinema is getting much more recognition at all level but not making those kind of money simply because limited viewer base. This will be obvious that they will not make money like other Hindi cinema simply because of viewer base but when more and more people start watching these cinemas then they will definitely get commercial success only thing should not happen that if people are accepting these films then directors or procedure should not take viewer for granted and deliver us same kind of cinema as we have seen or one who did not accept. Regional people always look at regional cinema close to their heart.

Special Mention of “Special Effects”

I was watching one sci-fi film day ago and I remembered my days when I used to watch very few movies in month, yes that was 20 years back.  I started thinking in back of my mind that how this entertainment industry has been changed over the years. Everything has been so much improved the content the actors and mostly the special effect. I remember when I used to see a movie and if there is scene of someone disappearing then it was jaw dropping or something like someone flying then we used to cheer for it also I think it much be nightmare for the director to shoot that scene even blasting cars or jumping from heights and all other cool stuff which we see everyday life in today’s movies, which used to hard in back in days but in spite of that we used to love those movies and still we cherish it.

Today we see everything which is dazzling, right from showing galaxies, spacecraft and even the car crashing it has been improved so much we can see very incredible story telling due to marvelous background score and dazzling special effect. Just think of any James Camron film without special effect would not have been record breaker for years. He has used the special effect to put realness in the story telling as well as showing the depth of emotions attached with any scene and more or less the impact in implacable and he did great job.

But again when we see every movie having lots and lots of special effect, I started thinking that is the real cinema is missing somewhere, are people are every much rely on special effect or they know that they can archive this stuff by clicking some mouse on computer screen then they did not even bother to try it in real world. Some time they exaggerate those thing beyond imagination that we start taking everything for granted that yes this is fake.

Murphy’s law “Too much of anything is bad”, this is the same way if film makers started using these kind of special effect in each and every movie. I must say if this continues then the day is not far when we stop believing that there could be good movies where we can see life, where we can see real people communicating, we can see love or even in sci-fi we can the thing which are real and human can simply relate to film.

 

My thinking might be to rational but if you love cinema and you really want to see good cinema is future then we should simply pass the message that we are ready for special effect but not ONLY that.
